MARGOT FRIEDLÄNDER

BERLIN/GERMANY 1921

FATHER WAS MURDERED PLANNED ESCAPE FAILED MOTHER AND BROTHER WERE MURDERED IN AUSCHWITZ MARGOT LIVED IN HIDING DEPORTATION TO THERESIENSTADT SHE MET HER HUSBAND THERE LIBERATION MIGRATION

Both of Margot Friedlander‘s parents were Jewish

Margot and her brother ralph, four years younger than her, lived with their mother Auguste Bendheim in Berlin-Kreuzberg

In 1942 her father was murdered in an extermination camp

On 20th of January 1943 the family planned their flight from Germany but Ralph was arrested by the Gestapo

Both Margot‘s mother and brother died in Auschwitz

From then on, Margot had to live in different hiding places

In spring 1944, she was found by so called ”Greifer“ (catcher) – Jews who rooted out and denounced other Jews on behalf of the SS

She was arrested and brought to the ghetto ”Theresienstadt“

There she met again Adolf Friedländer whom she had known from the Jewish culture federation in Berlin

He had also lost his complete family

The couple survived the Holocaust and got married

In 1946 they took the ship to New York

There they became US citizens and changed their name to ”Friedlander“
