1933 Family became subject to Hitler’s Nuremburg laws and other antisemitic legislation despite the fact that the Behrs were staunch German patriots

1937: Jewish children were no longer allowed to attend public school

Sent to German-Jewish boarding school in Sweden/Had to close

Return to Berlin

November 9-10, 1938: “Kristallnacht”/Father was arrested and sent to Buchenwald concentration camp/released

Left for Cuba before immigrating to the United States

1938: Mother and stepfather were evicted from their apartment

1942: Arrested and deported to Theresienstadt/Transported bodies for burial

1944: Volunteered to work on new SS headquarter/satellite camp of Theresienstadt to protect his parents from deportation to Auschwitz

Reunited with parents in 1945

1947: Migrated to the United States

Enlisted in the US army/Transfer to Berlin, where his mother still lived

Interrogated former Nazi personnel
