EMANUEL (MANNY) MANDEL

RIGA / LATVIA 1936

ANTI JEWISH LAWS. YELLOW STAR OF DAVID. GERMAN OCCUPATION. DEPORTATION TO BERGEN-BELSEN. BROUGHT TO SWITZERLAND. IMMIGRATION.

Born into a religious jewish family.

1936: return to Budapest.

1938: anti jewish laws. Forced to wear the yellow star of David. Father was worried someone might push manny into traffic/similar incidents had happened in Budapest.

Germans occupied Hungary in march 1944. Father compelled to join hungarian forced labor brigade. Left Hungary with his mother and the promise to be permitted to exit Nazi-occupied Europe. Diverted on a train to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

6 months of incarceration. Brought to Switzerland.

1945: migration to Palestine on a british troop ship.
Reunited with father.

1949: the family moved to the United States.
