ALAIN HIRSCHLER

MULHOUSE (ALSACE) / FRANCE 1938

OCCUPATION OF FRANCE. RESISTANCE OF THE PARENTS. THEIR DEPORTATION FOLLOWED. LIFE IN HIDING.

His family lived in France during its occupation. His father René was chief rabbi of Strasbourg and his mother Simone a poet. Both were active in organizing and supporting the fellow jewish men in the interment camps in the so-called “free zone” in occupied France.

1943 his parents were deported to Auschwitz Birkenau and killed after a death march in Mauthausen-Gusen.

His two sisters and he survived in hiding. After the war, they were raised by their grandmother.
